August’s New Moon in tropical Leo is a total solar eclipse. Solar eclipses magnify the New Moon symbolism, often correlating with more profound or significant starting points in the year. There can also be some increased intensity around events and our emotional responses.

Especially occurring in Leo, there is a stronger ego-dystonic dimension to this eclipse, potentially bringing some humbling experiences. Wherever there’s been an excess of hubris or overconfidence (narcissism especially), this eclipse can pull that out and bring with it some foreign perspective that can feel threatening.

Conversely, however, this eclipse can equally shed light on the unconscious beliefs that limit our confidence or prevent us from taking the spotlight. We could encounter these beliefs as external experiences that somehow highlight certain anxieties or insecurities. This can ultimately help push us more out into the open with some talent or ability we’ve been repressing or somehow prevented from expressing.

One dimension of Leo is its emphasis on visibility or performance, but it’s also a sign of joy, playfulness, and creative self-expression. There can be some profound shifts with these themes, and a quickening/acceleration of events dealing with them. This can represent a powerful transition into a more creative, playful, or expressive cycle for many of us, but that can also come through moving through the psychic junk preventing us from accessing it.
