This month’s New Moon in tropical Taurus represents a dramatic shift from previous weeks. The initiatory and catalytic energy of Aries is slowing into the steady and consolidating energy of Taurus. Soon after this New Moon, Mars enters Taurus (May 18), representing a condensing and cooling of the fiery, volatile, and dynamic energy of Mars’s Aries transit.

Yet, as with many Taurus lunations over the past years, Uranus’ alignment with this New Moon presents us with a paradox, because Uranian energy is anything but settling, especially in its new home sign of Gemini. It always adds that unexpected twist in the narrative, the surprise factor, or the sudden shift in the normal flow of things.

However, with all of this Taurus energy infused in this New Moon, via the powerful lineup of Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Ceres (and Uranus-Sedna from Gemini), there is an emphasis with this New Moon on our material circumstances—money, resources, livelihood, and somatic/embodied experience.

Something here is about to shift in a big way. Inevitably, this will also reflect broader economic and political processes, which have been in a chaotic flux due to ongoing geopolitical instability. The ultimate paradox of this New Moon is that something is shifting here, and we can feel it, but we don’t yet see it.

There’s an element of waiting that is ironically prominent with this New Moon. The dark of the Moon is often like this. It is the moment of seeding, but the results and fruits have not yet arrived. Circumstantially, things may have begun to restructure, but we don’t fully experience the effects yet. Things have been set in motion, but we merely have to await their ramifications.

But this is a powerful New Moon for establishing a solid, guided structure. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, and thus very strong and stable despite the chaotic elements present here. Though we must practice some level of non-attachment to ultimate outcomes—anything launched now will take many unexpected turns. Yet, also, emerging opportunities could ultimately help liberate us from stagnant conditions in the distant future. This is a time to deeply focus on and clarify our intentions and desires.
